Licensure

The following is a checklist to be followed to obtain an Iowa Funeral Director's license.

Funeral Director Licensure Checklist

  1. Once you have completed your educational program, you will need to complete the following to become licensed as a funeral director.
  2. Prior to the beginning of the final semester, complete the graduation application.
  3. Request a copy of your transcript to be sent to the Iowa Board of Mortuary Science at the end of the semester in which you complete the practicum course.
  4. During the practicum course, apply to take the National Board Examination with the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board by going to the ISFSEB website at www.cfseb.org.
  5. After you have completed the coursework and have passed both the Arts and Sciences sections of the National Board Examination, complete the application and forms required by the State Board (Funeral Director Internship) by going to http://www.idph.state.ia.us/licensure/board_home.asp?board=ms
